International
May 13 - 16 World Championship Bowl-Playing, 2010
Dinkelland, the Netherlands
Thanks to the generous hospitality of the N.K.B. Nederlandse Klootschieters Bond and patience of Cees van der Sluis, we were able to send the first ever team from the USA, “The All American Team” to the World Championship. This tournament, not just Road Bowling, also included Lofting (a throw through the air) and Moors Bowling (across a grass fairway-like track). Adrian Lappin and Fergal Carr, New York, and Travis Craig and Travis McClintic, West Virginia, formed the team, competing in the unfamiliar Lofting and Moors bowling, as well as our favorite Road Bowling. Judy Mize from West Virginia and Elle Can from New York cheered on the Americans, as well as friends and family from Ireland. Our first trip to Europe to compete - exciting to watch the best in the world every day practicing and in competition, to learn about new forms of outdoor bowling. We brought several Lofting and Moors bowls back to West Virginia, and expect to try them at local matches.
“North America had four performers in these championships and all made an impression. Adrian Lappin and Fergal Carr were excellent on the road on Sunday both making the semi-finals. Lappin, indeed, might have made the finals but was lined up against Gary Daly's record breaking foray in group four. Travis Craig from West Virginia hit an incredible three-hundred metres plus shot in the first rounds.”
It was a long and fast journey by train, plane and car, and we would like to thank Fergal Carr, Adrian Lappin, Travis Craig, Judy Mize and Elle Can for going over to represent New York, West Virginia, (and the town of Ireland, WV), and the United States. They appreciated how important our first trip to compete in Europe was in meeting new friends to advance the sport, and the privilege of being chosen for the first-ever All American Team. It wasn’t easy, but they did it. Special thanks to Travis Craig - he did not learn this sport from childhood, but has proven to be a tough opponent internationally, a sportsman and ambassador for West Virginia and the USA, representing the highest standards of sportsmanship.
Words from Judy Mize - “Due to the volcanic ash, our return flights were delayed in Amsterdam, which allowed us time to the see the awesome sights. The 2010 Holland Champion team FC Twente, which is a Dutch professional football (soccer) club, is from the Dinkelland/Denekamp area.
The N.K.B. Nederlandse Klootschiet Bonden ran a first-class tournament, well-organized with great hotel accommodations and friendly staff. I especially enjoyed walking each day from the car park to the competition past the beautiful countryside adorned with gardens and a large windmill. I have never seen so many bicycles in my life! They were everywhere in Amsterdam and even out in the country. Bikes were ridden by young and old alike. Walking the course many times with Fergal’s mom Pat and his girlfriend Elle was fun. I enjoyed getting to know Fergal’s family and friends from Ireland. High praise goes to Cees van der Sluis for his willingness and patience in assisting the All American Team and supporters in making the trip possible to the Netherlands.”
